Hair Extensions: What Nobody Tells You Before You Get Them

Extensions have a reputation problem - mostly because a lot of them are installed by people who were trained in one day, using the cheapest hair available, and charging accordingly. The result damages natural hair, looks obviously fake, and puts people off extensions for years. Done right, extensions are genuinely undetectable and can coexist with healthy natural hair for 6+ months.

The Hair Quality Question

The quality of the extension hair itself determines almost everything about how the finished result looks and lasts. Remy human hair - hair where the cuticle runs in the same direction from root to tip - blends seamlessly with natural hair and holds color and heat styling the same way your own hair does. Non-Remy hair has the cuticle stripped off to prevent tangling, which gives it a plastic, shiny quality that photographs beautifully in store displays and looks obviously fake in person within a few weeks.

We only use Remy human hair. It costs more. The difference in longevity and appearance justifies it.

Installation Method Matters for Your Hair Health

Tape-in extensions use adhesive tabs and lie flat against the scalp. They're the gentlest method for most hair types - no heat, no small attachments digging into the scalp, easy to remove without damage. They last 6–8 weeks before a move-up appointment.

Hand-tied extensions use a weft of hair sewn onto a bead that's attached directly to the natural hair. Done correctly by someone trained specifically in the technique, they're secure, invisible, and can last 8–10 weeks between move-ups. Done incorrectly - too tight, too close to the scalp, or with too much tension - they cause traction alopecia, a form of hair loss that can be permanent.

The single most important question to ask a stylist before getting hand-tied extensions: have they taken a certification course specifically for that method, and can they show you their certification? The technique requires real training. "I learned it on YouTube" is not an acceptable answer when someone is attaching things to your scalp.

The Maintenance Commitment

Extensions are not a one-time expense. They require move-up appointments every 6–8 weeks (tape-in) or 8–10 weeks (hand-tied), and the hair itself should be replaced every 6–12 months depending on how you care for it. The ongoing commitment is roughly $200–$350 every 6–8 weeks for tape-in, more for hand-tied depending on row count.

This is not a reason not to get them - it's a reason to understand what you're signing up for. Clients who go in with clear expectations and a maintenance plan tend to be happy. Clients who think of extensions as a one-time cost sometimes get frustrated with the ongoing commitment.

What to Do If Your Extensions Are Causing Damage

If you feel tension or pain at the attachment points, contact your stylist immediately. Properly installed extensions should be comfortable enough that you forget they're there. Tension that causes headaches, pulling, or scalp sensitivity is a sign the attachments are too tight or positioned incorrectly and should be addressed before they cause lasting hair loss.
